Some Things You May Not Know About Luring Fish In The Night
Night fishing is becoming more and more popular recently, and for good reason. Not only do you get cooler temperatures, less competition and congestion for the best areas, but there are also many more opportunities for bigger catches. When it comes to night fishing, do you need special bait? Yes and no. Depending on where you go, you may need to adjust the colors of your lures and plastics. In general, many fishermen like to use heavier tackle at night because it is easier to 'feel' the lure. Also, by using stronger equipment, it will be easier to land the bigger fish you will come across at night. Here are a few lures you may want to try next time you are out at night: - Hair or rubber jigs - 3/8 ounce or heavier
- Spinnerbaits.
- Poppers and wobblers topwater lures.
- Plastic worms. We have found when using topwater lures, our best success is with black and deep purple lures. For other lures, we have the best luck with dark, non-black colors (red/purple/brown). Of course, you will need to test various lure colors at your favorite fishing spot. Not all colors work at all times and at all places. Just take a handful of different colors with you until you see the one that works best where you are. As obvious as that sounds, you would be surprised at the people who "read somewhere" that black lures work best at night for example, so that's all they pack for their trip. If they come home empty handed, they blame the person who gave them the advice. That is why it is a good idea to listen to others for advice, but also use a little common sense at the same time. Another quick tip since we are talking about lures... Single hook lures are usually a good idea to prevent tangles when fumbling around with rods and reels in the darkness. Let me share one of my bass fishing experiences with you.
This is bayou country. When I go to the lakes south of Houston, I have to watch for gators. So I'm always keeping an eyeball peeled for 'em. But sometimes ...
So last night I look and everything is clear so I walk down to the water and start bass fishing. After a few minutes, while I'm looking around I see this big log. This big log that gets oddly thinner at the end up on the shore and thicker in the water, and has odd bumps on it. Hold on .. that doesn't look right. I look further up the log to see how far it extends into the water and...
It has 2 big ol' eyes ... lookin' at me!! And it's only 10 feet away (just a quick couple of steps for a gator). Ooookay!
I slowly and calmly reel in my line (on the outside - on the inside, I'm in total panic) pick up my gear and move on.
So I go over to this other part of the lake, and now it's dark so I get up on a pier. I'm sitting in the woods in the dark and I hear something walking down the pier towards me. Not heavy enough to be human footsteps. With what little bit of starlight there is, I can see something about the size of a medium dog coming at me. What do I do now?
Well, I can't see what it is, but I can tell it's not a dog. So I get aggressive towards it to see if I can scare it away. Fortunately, it worked. I pointed the tip of my fishing pole towards it and it scampered away.
As it left I thought it looked like a large raccoon. Probably nothing to worry much about after all, but they can be aggressive and rabid. But it's creepy in the woods in the complete dark not being sure what's around you.
Then, in the water, I see the outline of this huge catfish swim right up underneath me below the pier I'm on. Wow! That's a big one! I've got to move bait up and fish under the pier and catch him!
So, I decide to put a light on it and see if I can get a better look at this monster. I aim the spotlight straight down into the water and...
Hey, look at that weed ... there were no weeds along this pier earlier. Hmmm. So I lean further over the pier to get a better look at this mystery weed .... YIKES!
THAT'S NO WEED - IT'S A CLAW - A BIG CLAW!
There is a gator right underneath me!!
Apparently (and I was able to confirm this on follow up visits) the gator is savvy to the fact that people catch fish and put them on stringers around the dock; making a great free and easy meal for the gator.
That's enough. I'm goin' home. Forget all about that macho stuff and learn how to play guitar.

When fishing for bass in deep water try a spinnerbait that you have confidence in and have used to catch fish before. If the fish are inactive try a slow study retrieve. Spinnerbaits as you know, produce a vibration that attracts bass. Use a spinnerbait that has tandem blades and fish from shallow to deep. You can also use smaller blades that will allow the spinnerbait to run deeper. Try a 3/4 to 1 ounce spinnerbait.

The Old Heddon Meadow Mouse
Have you ever fished with a Heddon Meadow Mouse? How did you do? The reason I ask is, I have fished with them until I lost my last one and did extremely well at catching big bass using them. I would throw the lure out and let it sit. Then twitch it once and watch it turn sideways, twitch it again and watch it turn the other way, then move it so slow it barely made a ripple and BANG. That's when the fish would hit it. I know I have caught at least a dozen bass on this lure over 5 pounds and hooked one of the biggest bass I ever had on but it got loose. Yeah, I know you hear that all the time. But I am telling you this bass was at least 10 pounds and since I have a 12 pound 14 ounce on my wall, I know what a ten pound bass looks like. I seen a 6 pound bass caught on one the first time I ever seen one about 30 years ago and also seen a 7 1/2 pound walleye caught on one.
